Getting to know Sevierville
Sevier County was created in 1794, and the following year the settlement at the "Forks of the Little Pigeon" was chosen as county seat and renamed Sevierville, for John Sevier — a Revolutionary War-era militia colonel who went on to serve as Tennessee’s first governor. James McMahan donated the 25-acre town-square tract, and the city incorporated in 1901; it is often cited as the eighth-oldest city in Tennessee. The Sevier County Courthouse on Court Avenue, completed in 1895 in a Beaux Arts/Romanesque design, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
The courthouse lawn holds a bronze statue of Dolly Parton — a Sevierville native — seated with a guitar, sculpted by Jim Gray and unveiled in 1987; Dolly Parton Parkway (US-441) carries her name through town. Sevierville sits at the confluence of the East, Middle and West forks of the Little Pigeon River, roughly midway between Knoxville and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about ten miles from the park entrance.
Real estate here runs two tracks at once: full-time residential and commercial services — including a hospital and major grocers — for county residents, and a genuinely active vacation-cabin and short-term-rental market drawn by the Smokies, distinct from the attraction-dense strip through neighboring Pigeon Forge. Tanger Outlets Sevierville sits along the Parkway, and US-441 continues on to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the national park.
Getting around
US-441 (the Parkway) links Knoxville, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the national park; from Knoxville it is roughly 30 miles via I-40 to Exit 407.
